I'm formatting a manuscript and looking at using a large font size for the first letter. Works great except Word introduces a scaled line spacing below it, like below. How would I retain the line spacing of the normal type in the paragraph?

First, you may want to, instead, use a DropCap.
If that is not satisfactory, try setting your paragraph formatting for exact line spacing.

Thanks! I hadn't seen the Drop Cap option and will consider in the future. For this application, I'd like to get the my OP working.
I had tried selecting the first char, right-clicking, and changing the paragraph line spacing, but unfortunately it applied to the whole paragraph. So, the whole para changed but the first line was still proportionately the same. |

First, line spacing is paragraph-level formatting.
Try exactly the size of your expanded character, in points. Otherwise, you could use WordArt for your first letter. Word will mark the remainder as a spelling error unless it forms a complete word without that letter. WordArt is also on the Insert tab. Note, WordArt is no longer part of your text. It is a graphic. This is not the case with the other methods. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 03-29-2019 at 08:24 PM. |
