Thanks! I hadn't seen the Drop Cap option and will consider in the future. For this application, I'd like to get the my OP working.
I had tried selecting the first char, right-clicking, and changing the paragraph line spacing, but unfortunately it applied to the whole paragraph. So, the whole para changed but the first line was still proportionately the same.
