Find your normal template with Word closed and make a backup.
How to Find the Normal Template Then open your Normal Template in Word (do not double-click on it). How to Open the Normal Template Under File, click on the button to convert it. Save and close your Normal Template.

Compatibility mode simply means that the document or its template were created in an earlier version of Word. Open the template (or templates) and affected documents and saveas with the same names to update them.
