We have a Word 2003 document that includes some control toolbox check boxes. Every time we open the document, we have to exit edit mode.

how to disable the control toolbox Edit Mode?

The check boxes from the Control Toolbox are ActiveX controls, and it is macro security that forces Design mode when you open the document. I do not recommend you to reduce macro security. Instead, delete the ActiveX controls and make use of ordinary form fields (which you can insert from the Forms toolbar).
