You would need to insert a pair of fields
{ PAGE } of { NUMPAGES } Use Ctrl + F9 for the bracket pairs.

If you are reporting something you see rather than something you typed, try pressing Alt+F9.

Its still not working. Is there anything special in insertion of this text string or we may write in direct in the footer |

Did you use Ctrl-F9 to create the field braces (i.e. {})? You can't simply type them.

Well, if the answer's 'no', the solution is to do it the right way. This isn't rocket science - you can also insert the page numbering by opening the Header or Footer, then choosing Header & Footer Tools|Page Number>Bottom of Page>Page X of Y>Plain Number.
