I've recently upgraded from Word 2007 to Word 2016. I know how to select Text Boundaries but is there a way I can get rid of the "ruled lines" effect?

Can you show us a screen grab of this effect?

Ok, that is in File > Options > Advanced > Show document content > Show text boundaries
Turn it off.

See Text Boundaries Display in Microsoft Word. Short answer, they are the way they are by design and you can't change it. There are workarounds.

Thanks Guessed, but I need the overall text boundaries but do not like the "ruled lines" effect; i.e. I prefer the 2007 and previous layout.
Charles Kenyon, can your work-around provide this? |

They can if you use them. Did you look at the page I linked?

Yes, but none of the links were relevant.
I think that I will have to live with this MS change. |

If that is your wish, you certainly can. None of the workarounds is perfect, but they are real and they work in both Word 2013 and 2016. Perhaps you have a different definition of relevant than I use. |
