Default Lost heading formatting Word 2016 from 2013

My company deployed the 2016 version of Microsoft Word this week. Now my headings in documents are different. I use a template with the format for headings. After the deployment of 2016, the documents I am creating from the template are losing the space between the number of the heading and the words. For example:

First heading should be: I. PURPOSE

Now, it is: I.PURPOSE.

When I try to copy the heading from the template, it doesn't take the spaces.

I have gone into each heading and added spaces, but when I save the document and open it again, the spaces are gone!

HELP!

Perhaps you have the 'Automatically update document styles' option checked, under Developer|Templates|Document Template>Templates, and your Word 2016 template doesn't have the same formatting for those Styles.

Found the Developers tab. Don't think that is the issue. I'll check it out.

No, I don't have the "Automatically update document styles" option checked.

The spacing between the number and the text is determined by the setup of numbering under the multi-level list numbering. You should be following the steps shown in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.

Simply adding spaces in the style, won't work, it has to go through the numbering controls.

Like macropod, I suspect a setting to update the styles. Take a look at the setting in a document created from your template.
