Default Lost heading formatting Word 2016 from 2013

My company deployed the 2016 version of Microsoft Word this week. Now my headings in documents are different. I use a template with the format for headings. After the deployment of 2016, the documents I am creating from the template are losing the space between the number of the heading and the words. For example:

First heading should be: I. PURPOSE

Now, it is: I.PURPOSE.

When I try to copy the heading from the template, it doesn't take the spaces.

I have gone into each heading and added spaces, but when I save the document and open it again, the spaces are gone!

HELP!
