This all depends on the template.

  1. Using a 2016 template in an earlier version: Only problem will be features introduced in Word 2016 and not present earlier. Likely, no problems.
  2. Using 2010 template in Word 2016: It depends on the template. All you can do is try.
You can open a Word 2010 template (note OPEN) and use Save As to save it in Word 2016 format. You should see if there are problems. There should be no problems using such a template back in Word 2010.

I seldom convert templates unless I notice a problem with the documents produced by them unless I want to use features only available in a newer version. About half of the templates I currently use are .dot templates.
