For Heading Styles to be picked up in a Table of Contents, they need to be applied to the whole paragraph. If you need to use run-in headings, see: http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/RunInSidehead.htm. I'd be inclined to use the Style Separator approach discussed in the article.
