I have a similar problem - running Mac OS X Sierra, Word 2016 from Office 365 latest update (15.35).
Got a large document (50,000 words) with a standard table of contents set up to create based on Heading 1 and 2 from styles pane. This all worked fine but now is recognising half the 'normal' styled text in the document as table of contents material - it makes the Document Map completely useless and if I update the toc does the same there. Any suggestions warmly welcome! |

In Word for Windows, the Document Map (not the Navigation Pane) was a flawed feature that caused problems when used for editing rather than navigation. I do not know whether the Mac version has the flawed feature or not. |

OK so I reformatted the whole doc (which took ages!) - all the normal text that had become part of the Document Map was still normal text but in the Outline view had been changed from Body Text to Level 1. Having done this - the map worked great and TOC was correct... until I saved, closed and reopened - at which point it's changed all the same parts to Level 1 again... Geez - I'm thinking this must be a bug as I don't seem to be doing anything to cause it
Thanks for replying btw
