Default saving .dotx template

I am having a problem trying to save a .dotx template from a web server on our internal network. I'm running Win7 SP1. Without Word 2010 installed, I browse to the link and Internet Explorer 11 prompts me to save file as a .dotx. Everything is good. I install Word 2010, browse to same link in IE and it now prompts me to save template file as a .docx. Any ideas why I can no longer save as .dotx? If I browse same URL to template file using Chrome or Firefox, I can save as .dotx while Word is installed.
