The Page setup tools apply to page columns, not to table columns. That said, it's not entirely clear what you're trying to achieve. If you have unwanted table columns, you can delete them. You might then be able to get the results you're after via the Page setup tools.

I think I was clear enough saying that the table is
narrower than half the available page width. But I deleted one of the four columns to check. It still does the same thing. My question is: does not MSWord allow a narrow eight-page long table to go on roughly four pages if the number of columns is changed from one to two? Row heights are small, about 30 rows per page. Could be I need a program fix?
