Default Spaces after numbering

I have been tearing my hair out today. I have created a document and used the 1-1.1-1.1.1 numbering for the different sections. When I get to number 10 the first level is ok (10). But the next level (10.1) and so on has a larger space between the digit and the start of the text. I have look at the format, cleared formatting, reapplied it.made it a table, took it away. Adjusted the margins and tabs on the ruler and in the program, everything I can think of. I. read some people were having problems with Verdana text. I am using Times New Roman. I used Ctl space... Anyone have any idea?
