Default Normal template - file name

I have tried editing my normal template but am having problems with file name.

I opened normal.dotm and changed margins. I opened the footer and from Insert - Quick Parts - Fields selected File name. Then back in footer I added [space] - [space] and then back in Quick Pats selected Date.
The file name now showed a footer

Normal.dotx - 12 Sept 2016 as I expected and wanted.

Problem is that when I then opened a new blank document, the changed margins were applied, the footer showed but not as expected i.e.

Doc1.docx - 12 Sept 2016
but as
Normal.dotx - 12 Sept 2016 even though the title bar at the top of the screen showed the document name as Doc1.docx
Saving it with a new file name and then re-opening it showed the same wrong file name again.
Any suggestions as to why please?

Hi,
  1. You should not put any text in the footer, including the field. Period. If you ever use Word to make envelopes or labels you will regret it. You do not need to do this. I remember making this understandable mistake in Word 97.
  2. "Doc1.docx" indicates that you created a new document based on the normal template, not opened the normal template.
How to Open the Normal Template You should not have to open the normal template, though, to change settings.
  3. The normal template, in ribbon versions of Word, is named normal.dotm. You cannot take another template and rename it to be normal.dotm without disabling functions in Word, though.
There are ways to get your field where you want it without putting it in the normal template. See all of the following and choose one or more:
These links are to five files you can download that will give you ideas on how to do what you want.
