I have a new laptop with Win 10 and Office 2016. I have quite a few custom templates on the old machine. They are all in subdirectories under:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\... Where do I put them on the Win10 machine so Word 2016 can find them? Thanks |

You would put them wherever you want. You have to know where that is. Word 2013 and 2016 provide for setting a location for Custom Office Templates that may be the location you would want.
The default location for user templates is the same in Word 2016 as for earlier versions. See Templates in Microsoft Word File New Variations in the Versions of Word |

Word already knows.
Here is one more link. How to Find the Normal Template The location of the user templates folder is the folder where you find the normal template. If you have not changed that location, that is the default location. If you have changed the location, Word will not look for your templates in the default location. It may not anyway. See below. The default location is not necessarily the desirable location. Look also into the location set for your Custom Office Templates. That is an easier location to reach if you are using the default File>New screen. If you are using the default file new screen rather than the legacy FileNew dialog, you will not be able to have access to templates that are stored in the user templates folder. You will have access to those that are stored in a Workgroup templates folder when you have designated something as a Workgroup Templates Folder. Either method will look for files in the Workgroup Templates folder. If you use the legacy dialog, it will not look for templates in the Custom Office Templates folder. I know it is confusing. That is why I gave you the other links earlier. |

If you have not changed the default location enter or copy
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates to the address window of Windows File Explorer and you will be taken to the folder that contains the user templates. Note that this folder is normally hidden. You will have to open each old template you wish to use in Word 2016 and SaveAs with the same name and location, or you will see Compatibility Mode in the title bar of documents created from that template.
