Did you make sure to use the built-in headings for your numbers? If you click in the first Heading 1 paragraph of the document and then click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List, you can verify that the settings are correct.
For assistance with the various options, Shauna Kelly's article is an excellent resource.
