Default Problems with creating and saving word templates

Dear all,

I created a template in word, put pictures in the header and footer and saved everything as a template (.dotx).

Now when I want to open it again, this error message appears: "the file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents". By clicking on OK there appears another error message "Word found unreadable content in your file. Do you want to recover the contents of this document? If you trust the soruce of this document, click yes" - so I click yes, and the file can be opened.

However, this file is made for other employees, which might not click on all these buttons, but instead just leave it closed.

What did I do wrong?
Can somebody help me?

Thanks in advance.

You template is damaged. You should create a new one. Make sure you save it in the .dotx format. Saving in the .docx format and changing the extension to .dotx won't work; doing so is liable to generate the kinds of errors you're now seeing.

One other possibility that occurs to me is that you were saving on a flash drive. (Not a good idea.)

Only Word can change a document to a template using the SaveAs command. (It might be possible for a very skilled programmer to do it, but as Paul noted, simply changing the extension in Windows does not do it.)

Also, should not be "opening" the template but rather double-clicking on it or using it through File>New to create a new document.
