I have just recently started having some problems with Word 2003. It will only let me save a document twice before it comes up with:

" Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions:
1. Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
2. Make sure there is sufficient free memory and/or disk space


3. Open the file with the Text Recovery Converter."

Well, all my work is saved to USB Stick. I've checked it for memory space and it has used up 318mb out of a 3.72 gb memory (so no probs there!) I've also scanned it for viruses, and nothing came up. It's been doing this for the past 3 weeks now and it's really beginning to annoy me. I've tried checking the file permissions for the document I was working on, but it wouldn't even let me access the document to check!

Has anybody else been having this problem or just me? also, is microsoft xp still being supported or could that be the problem why Word isn't working properly? I'm really scratching my head here!

Saving your work to USB stick directly from Word is the problem. This corrupts Word files.

When within Word, act as if any mobile media, including USB sticks, DVD-RW, etc. do not exist. Save only to your hard drive. Open only from the hard drive. Print only from the hard drive.

How long have people now been familiar with USB sticks? even, with running programs direct from USB sticks? and now there's cloud storage … but if it's Word, best stick with floppies <rofl>

Thanks for your replies guys, and I'll use that tip about the USB to see if that stops the issue. For the past five years at least, every single bit of my work has been saved to USB, and it seems too much of a coincindence that as soon as Windows XP stops being supported by microsoft, then all this trouble with Word 2003 flares up.

Rest assured, your troubles have nothing to do with then end of MS support for Windows XP or Office 2003.
