Apostrophe problems

If you turn on Word's formatting display, are there any characters between the ' and s (e.g. a space)?

I have seen this happen when the apostrophe was a different font. I don't know why it happens, or how it became a different font to begin with (I get documents from other people for editing), but making the apostrophe the same font as the other text fixed it.

Strange things can happen, fwiw, with typographer's quotation marks when the source file moves from application to application – but you've worked out a solution, which is what matters.
