hi i had read the previous thread but it seems to be somewhat different than my problem. I also have word document with chapter which are connected to headings 1. And here i have figures in all the chapters and i want them to be indexed in "Table of Figures" in way like 1.1 , 1.2 ......for the 1st chapter and 2.1 , 2.2 ,2.3 ............for the third chapter and so on. But when i go to add a caption to the figures of 2nd and onward chapters it happen to be that the Default caption heading reads out "Figure 1" , which non changeable. So please suggest me exact way to do this. Thanx alot for your time and efforts. I am trying to attach my file but it seems its exceeding the acceptable file size(1.5mb)

And now you can see i had made different caption for every section and sub section of the chapter manually(spent 4hrs) and tried to made index out of it but that too failed. Sir Please help me with my file, i am sharing it here with a third party hosting service. And also let me know too what was the problem and step by step procedure to rectify it.

When you say "the previous thread" it would help if you gave us a link to that thread. If my response does not give you the help you need please either post a response with a link to that thread or edit your previous post to show it.

In inserting the Caption, you need to click on the Numbering button and then check the box to include chapter number. You need to associate this with a particular numbered style. You would want to use the full stop (period) as a separator.

Sorry, you do not want to pay my hourly rate to do this! My function here is to teach you to fish, not to serve dinner.

You do not have automatic numbering attached to your headings. If you did, this would be very simple. Refer to the article by Shauna Kelly on how to do automatic numbering. It is a step-by-step process. Do this with a copy of your document until you are confident it is doing what you want.

I noticed a number of things that could cause problems in your document, long term, including the use of the Enter key for spacing. I would urge you to take the time to read the series of pages beginning with: Basic Concepts of Microsoft Word - from Shauna Kelly. It will save you time and angst in the long run.
