Word 11.6.6 ? as in Word 2003 without the service packs? (Sorry, I should have noticed you were using Word 2004 for the Mac.)

That it says it is in the process of converting could have something to do with it.

Try opening your shortened document and copying everything except the last paragraph mark. Paste that into a new document.

Can you better edit that document?
