Question Use an already-prepared list to create a new Par. Numbering style?

Please let me preface this by saying there are few things in the world I hate more than trying to figure out Paragraph numbering styles in MS Word. I've watched tutorials, followed steps, whatever, but I can never set something up using the editors that gives me what I want--not just in the current document, but for all of them. I have been able to figure out all kinds of funky other things you can do with Word, but paragraph numbering styles flat-out stymies the hell out of me.

I want to be able to have a multilevel list that has the formattingshown at the bottom of this post. If there is a way for me to simply to type some sentences in a word doc where I manually set the settings and then execute some ninja-code function that tells the damn program just to copy and use it, that would be great, but I'll happily do everything within the style commands themselves if someone can help me through this. I know it shouldn't be as difficult as I'm finding it, but I'm officially at my wit's end.

I want it to be that when I click on the Multi-level List icon on the paragraph ribbon that the above format is the format used every single time as the default. Hitting <enter> should automatically generate the next number on the level; <tab> should advance the level; <shift-tab> should decrease the level. My thanks in advance for whatever help you can offer. Here's what I want it to look like. (The green lines are reference points to the ruler lines.)

You can create a multi-level list to have your numbering attached to styles if you follow the directions at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010. I know your profile indicates you are using Word 2013 but, these instructions are spot on and will work if you follow the instructions.

Reference "I want it to be that when I click on the Multi-level List icon on the paragraph ribbon that the above format is the format used every single time as the default" you may want to create a template in that format. Guidance to do that can be found at Charles Kenyons link: Templates in Microsoft Word.

Spend the time necessary to learn these processes and it will pay ten-fold in the future. Hope this helps...

Default Page no longer exists

Unfortunately, the link to the article is broken and trying to connect to the site from 3 different browsers says the page can't be displayed. I have seen similar comments to that effect on other forum sites.

I find it so incredibly mindboggling that MS has made this process such an obtuse endeavor. You should be able to create the type of layout I made in the example and then just click a function that says, "OK, create a new outline template based on these settings." It cannot possibly be that difficult to code that.

FWIW, all of the links to the ShaunaKelly website seem to be not functioning today. I, too, have tried access those links with the same "page cannot be displayed" notice. This has happened in the past so hopefully, maybe just some website maintenance or something similar is taking place and will be returned to service soon.

Having said that, there are other websites that can be searched for the same type of information such as:
http://word.mvps.org/;
http://www.gmayor.com/Word_pages.htm;
http://addbalance.com/usersguide/index.htm
...and more.

Just make sure that you scan through the links within those websites to find the topic you need.

Reference "You should be able to create the type of layout I made in the example and then just click a function that says, "OK, create a new outline template based on these settings." ...I said it once, I'll say it again:

Guidance to do that can be found at Charles Kenyons link: Templates in Microsoft Word.

I'll continue to try Shauna's site and will check out the others. Many thanks for the references.
