I'm trying to edit an existing document that was created by someone else with Mac Pages.
One paragraph style uses 16 pt Iowan Old Style font. But if I insert a quotation mark in such a paragraph, it gets inserted in Arial Unicode MS font! (That doesn't seem to happen with any other characters.) I used the Style Inspector on that paragraph style and found that it indeed has BOTH fonts defined for it: Font: (Default) Iowan Old StyleLanguage: English (U.S.)This totally threw me. How can a paragraph style have TWO different fonts defined for it? And why is one marked "(Default)" and the other one marked "(Intl)"? And why does the "Intl" style only work with quotation marks? This is ruining my ability to do global replaces with quotation marks--they get inserted in the wrong font. |

It's possible this is happening because Word is trying to use smart quotes but the Iowan Old Style font doesn't support the Unicode characters used for that.

No, the curly quotes are available in Iowan Old Style font. I know this, because after it inserts the curly quotes in Arial Unicode MS font, I can select them and change them myself manually to Iowan Old Style font.
This document was originally created in Mac Pages, and the author of the document says that this never happens on his Mac Pages installation. In fact, when I've sent him back the document with the curly quotes in Arial Unicode MS font, he can open it on his Mac Pages and it comes out in Iowan Old Style font! So I've decided that it's some kind of funky incompatibility between Mac Pages and Word. I'm not going to try to chase it down anymore. |

Do you actually have the Iowan Old Style font installed on your system? If not, Word will substitute another font - unless the font is embedded in the document and, even then, substitution may occur depending on the font embedding method used.
