As in learning anything new, if you can find someone who knows the difference between a principle and a particular, you'll be way ahead. someone who explains the principles of how Word works, what makes it do what it does, will make the learning curve less steep.
That is not to ignore teaching you specifically what you need to know for the kind of work you will be doing. However, knowing the why, rather than just the what, will help you solve problems as they inevitably arise. In any case, this forum has a number a wonderful experts, and can be a tremendous aide.
