I remember well struggling with Word myself, years ago. It will certainly help to get the basics down.
One thing I might suggest, is displaying hidden characters, which you do by pressing the paragraph mark (¶) button on the Home tab of the Ribbon. This will show you paragraph marks (and can display other marks, such as spaces), which can help you see what is happening on the page. Yu can always turn it off if its in the way.

I'd take more time for instructions but have other obligations at the moment.
