Not sure how to articulate this (see attached image) but it is driving me crazy!
I am trying to insert a TOC - I have formatted all the various sections as headers as I would like. Now when I go to include TOC, it adds the TOC at the start but includes the TOC as section 1 thereby shifting all the subsequent sections down. Is there anyway to remove the actual TOC table as a section in its own right? |

Without seeing the actual document, one can only hazard an educated guess, so mine would be to ensure that the Table of Contents text included in the TOC itself is formatted with a style other than the heading styles used in the TOC. The style can be similarly formatted to the Heading style already used. You can still number the Table of Contents paragraph if you wish and start the heading style numbers from 2.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
The TOC style is automatically to "TOC header style". I can highlight the entire table and change this to "Normal" header style for example (which is not included in the main body of the thesis) and then the TOC does not show as "1" but then I lose all my indentations and other formatting of the TOC which I quite like. . . I assumed most people would not want TOC as a section in its own right - there must be an easy fix for this? |

It is not the Table of Contents that you need to change the style of, but the title of table of contents page/section that you have formatted with the heading style that causes it to be included in the Table of Contents.

Bingo!
For some reason it wouldn't let me change just the title of the TOC to "Normal" but if I changed it to "No spacing" style it solved the problem! Thanks for your help. . . good experience of the forum so far for this newbie! |
