I need help with figuring out how to get my table of contents to show the section numbering. The table of contents was previously created by someone else.

Updating the TOC should help, assuming that the document contains a "live" TOC (= a TOC field). Click in the TOC and press F9. If asked, choose to update the entire table.
On the other hand, if the TOC was typed in, create a proper TOC as discussed in the article at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...fcontents.html.
