Default Update all references does not work for me

I have a fairly large doc (about 175 pages).

Update all references is not working for me.

I select all (control A) and hit F9. It gives me a popup asking about the Table of Contents and List of figures -- do I want to just update the page numbers or the entire table(s). I say just the page numbers (although I've tried the other response as well).

The page numbers in my x refs (in the body of the document) to not get updated.

I'm talking about things like "see section X.x on page xx". The page numbers do not get updated when I hit that control A, F9.

if I select a smaller amount of text, say a page or so at a time and hit F9, the references DO get updated. But when it is select all (control a), even though the text is selected, the xrefs do not get updated.

I've also tried the "print preview" method of updating all the references but that does not work either.

VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!

What gives?
is this a bug?

has anyone else seen this?

any way to fix it?

the only thing I can do now is update each page one at a time.

Please let me know if you have any insight into this problem.

thanks.
gary in Vermont.

I am not familiar with that process (never used it) but, after reviewing http://www.shortcutworld.com/en/win/Word_2010.html, it looks as though you should hit F8 (instead of F9) following the use of Control A.

Hope this helps. But, if not, I will stand by to learn something from the MVP posters.

hmm, I will try that but for the record, this is right on the MS website:

"update the document by pressing Ctrl + A (to select all) and then F9 (to update the fields.)"

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...7-50460645e82c

plus, the f9 works on a paragraph or page of selected text; it's just when I have more selected at once that it doesn't work.

I looked at your link and it says F9. where do you see F8? look at section 13 Fields:

*to update all fields, select the complete document with ctrl+a, then update fields by pressing f9)

Yes, I would think your information is more correct (using F9). The responders to that query in your link are the experts...not me.

I am interested in the fix for your problem tho, so will monitor this thead.
