I use Word 2013 as part of Office 365 Pro Plus, with Word installed on my PC. Windows 7, 64-bit (though Office is 32-bit), in case relevant.
I am picking up a document that I have used regularly during the course of this year with no problem. In various places I need to cross-reference in the text the headings and tables. The headings (using Word's automatic heading styles, modified) work fine and I can cross-reference. I have set up the tables as "Exhibits", and they show "Exhibit 2.7" etc - using a field. Example code = Exhibit { STYLEREF 1 \s } { SEQ Exhibit \* ARABIC \s 1 } I don't really know how to use fields and cross-references, but managed to get this to work early on in the year, and have been using the same document ever since. To insert a cross-reference to the Exhibit, it was very easy (I simply selected Insert / Cross-reference, and "Exhibit" was one of the options in the drop-down, and I could choose which numbered Exhibit to cross-refer to). Now this has changed (and it has changed for all previous versions of the document that I open). "Exhibit" is no longer on the drop-down list, so I cannot insert a cross-reference to any of my Exhibits. Any ideas? Has there been an update to Word that might have changed this? I can't remember how to set it up again, and don't have much time to research this, so will have to just use manual references if I can't get it to work (a real pain to keep track of as I update my document). |

It seems as if you have lost the caption label called Exhibit. Recreate it by clicking the New Label button in the References tab | Cross-reference dialog box.
Caption labels are always stored in the Normal template, so if you deleted the label or if you moved to a different computer you have lost all custom caption labels. The default ones (Figure, Table, Equation) are built into Word and will always be present.
