Default Can no longer update fields!

Hi All,

This is my first post here.

I work in MS Word, editing and doing layout for books that will be commercially printed. An average book will be about 300-500 pages, 10 chapters, with full TOC, index, numerous figure and table captions, heading cross-references, and bookmarks. I've been doing this for about 6 years.

For the first time today, I have a document that has lost the ability to have its fields updated all at once. I can shade and right-click then choose "Update field" for an individual caption autonumber, or update the TOC or index separately. I can force the captions to update by inserting a new caption.

But, I can no longer use Ctrl-A, and right-click to Update Fields. That menu item is gone. Using F9 has no apparent effect. I have to go back to an earlier revision (4 iterations ago) before the global Update Fields will work.

Does anyone have any experience or insight to offer on this?

Thanks much,
-sTephanie
