To add text (to the TOC) that isn't present in the main body of the document, you can use a TC field. To exclude the page number for an individual entry, add the \n switch to the TC field. For more, see http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/TOCTips.htm.

Thanks for the response. I found that earlier and couldn't make sense of it since my toggled code has "hyperlink" first inside the braces and all those examples start with "TOC." I am really confused. Do I ignore the hyperlink term and the '\l "_Toc...' ?

Default No joy yet.

None at all. I've pored over TOC Tip and Tricks and cannot make it work.

I have attached a doc showing my need.
1. inhibit the contents line so it doesn't show during update.
2. pull the bookmarked part titles onto the line "Part x."
3. pull the bookmarked titles on the line "Chapter x."
4. inhibit page numbering for the Part x items only.

I have been having problems getting switches to work in my field codes. It's my first attempt. My chapters are bookmarked C01,C02, etc. The parts are P01,P02, etc. Seems simple enough.

Any help will be appreciated.

For the "Part" sections, use a TC field. The text within quotation marks determine what the field displays. You can use \L followed by a number (between 1 and 9) to specify a level in the TOC; by default, level 1 is being used. The \n switch omits page numbers. To the TOC field code, add the \f switch.

I'm attaching a simple example where the chapters have been created with the built-in headings and the Parts are added with TC fields. I'm using a custom style called Part Style to format the text added.

To show/hide the TC fields, show/hide hidden text (which you can do by clicking the ¶ button on the Home tab). To show/hide the a large number of other fields, including the TOC field, use Alt+F9.

Thanks, Stefan. Here's what I tried:

{TC "Part I: The Beginning" \L 1 \n}Part I

I F9 to save it.
My TOC toggles to one line (looks like the TOC code)
When I toggle it back, either my Part one is as it was or still in code form.
I tried toggling to hide code and the whole thing reduces to one coded line again.

What am I doing wrong? I cannot see it. I know this should be simple -- it's only code, but something here isn't allowing it's proper use.

Thanks,
Greg

Did you remember to update the TOC after you modified the field code (click inside it and press F9)?

If you can share your document, or relevant parts of it, upload an attachment in *.doc or *.docx format.

Yes, and that's when the code reduces to the TOC code and not just the one line display.

I'm attaching an excerpt. Note that what I am attempting is:

Contents
Part I: In the beginning
Chapter 1: Title Chapter One ..................5
Chapter 2: Title Chapter Two ................17
etc.

Where the part text and the chapter text come via bookmarks.

Stefan, I appreciate your helping me.

Greg
