I found this online after some digging....
She talks about how to create, change, and use templates. I just used her "change" directions and went in and changed the Normal template which had somehow ended up as a .dotm and reset the information, then saved the new version. As long as I create documents using that it seems to so far be functioning okay.
She has awesome info on that website for anyone else in a panic.

First, the Normal template MUST be a dotm template in the ribbon versions of Word. This is not optional.

The second thing is that your original problem likely came from vertically justified alignment in your template.
Alignment / Justification of Text in Microsoft Word
The normal template should seldom be your basis for new documents. You should have custom templates for most of the things you do and the normal template acts more like a scratch pad to hold resources.
