I would suggest that you start by opening the Reveal Formatting pane (press SHIFT+F1)

Put a checkmark in both boxes at the bottom of the pane, Distinguish style source and Show all formatting marks

Expand any collapsed items in the pane

This may give you a clue.

Also, there is a Select Object command ... in the Home Tab, Editing group, Select dropdown button, Select Objects
