I am attempting to resurrect, edit and finish two book started under Word 97. I have three questions:
(1) There is a set of obsolete sticky links (subdocuments) in the document in one that points to obsoleted links. [I found how to delete in Outline View but not how to add a subdocument to master document.] How can I remove them book from main body and insert the correct ones? (2) The original documents had to be broken into segments because of size constraints with a master link file. This book has a table of contents, footnotes colected at the bottom of each page and a Word compiled name index at the document end. How large can an un-segmented file be until Word 10 won’t work? (3) Does the Word 10 compiling mechanics work the same as Word 97? I would dearly like to know of a "How to book" that address using the above word features for I can't seem to find them in Word 10. I am current using Win 8 and Word 2010 on a 4 processor, 24 GB Ram PC. TIA Last edited by justphilip2003; 01-14-2014 at 09:44 PM. |

Still can't insert new subdocuments into master file. I am slow resolving all other format issues except this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. JP

This probably sounds unhelpful, but many sources advise against trying to do anything mission-critical with master documents: the effort you put into setting things up again while you move to 2010 could be setting you up for more effort when things go wrong. You may want to trawl this forum for comments before going any farther <g>
Many people also say, more positively, that Word is fine with long documents and doesn't really require you to use a master document mechanism. Try just rounding up all your content into a single [new, separate] Word 2010 file and see if it behaves! book-ish details such as chapter first pages and running headers are usually handled with sections, but you probably knew that already. |

I've resolved the last problem by rebooting my PC. I can't explain the cause. I'm taking eNGINe's advice and I am using the insert subdocument sparingly. Thanks for the help.

If you value your work, don't use Master Documents. See:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/Wh...ocsCorrupt.htm http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/RecoverMasterDocs.htm http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm FWIW, there's little the Master Documents 'feature' provides that you can't achieve through the use of a properly configured template for the document set, combined with the use of INCLUDETEXT & RD fields for whatever linking might be required.

I have resolved to not use Master/subdocument in Word. I have one question involving cleanup; I deleted the section break and all visible subdocument links, but I still get the question "do you want to open subdocuments" when I update the Table of contents. Is there a point I missed on cleaning it up? TIA JP

Having not worked with Master Documents, I can't say what the issue there is. Have you tried copying the body content, excluding both the TOC and the final paragraph break, to another document and recreating the TOC there?

I've done a copy paste to a new file and I think I have resolved my problems. I must say the problems appear to be mainly my ignorance on the way Word functions. The numbering problem was an attempt by Word to place a new figure before existing ones, hence the repeated use of one figure number. now I distance the last from the new insertions and all works well. Thanks for your response
