Default Word 10 problems from Word 97 docs conversion to docx

I am attempting to resurrect, edit and finish two book started under Word 97. I have three questions:

(1) There is a set of obsolete sticky links (subdocuments) in the document in one that points to obsoleted links. [I found how to delete in Outline View but not how to add a subdocument to master document.] How can I remove them book from main body and insert the correct ones?

(2) The original documents had to be broken into segments because of size constraints with a master link file. This book has a table of contents, footnotes colected at the bottom of each page and a Word compiled name index at the document end. How large can an un-segmented file be until Word 10 won’t work?

(3) Does the Word 10 compiling mechanics work the same as Word 97?

I would dearly like to know of a "How to book" that address using the above word features for I can't seem to find them in Word 10.

I am current using Win 8 and Word 2010 on a 4 processor, 24 GB Ram PC. TIA
