I've done a copy paste to a new file and I think I have resolved my problems. I must say the problems appear to be mainly my ignorance on the way Word functions. The numbering problem was an attempt by Word to place a new figure before existing ones, hence the repeated use of one figure number. now I distance the last from the new insertions and all works well.
