If you are referring to cross-references, create them via References tab | Cross-reference.
Note that you have to force an update of the cross-reference fields. Fields in the selection can be updated with F9, but switching to Print Preview (Ctrl+F2) and then back to your previous view (ESC) applies to all cross-references at once (no matter what is selected).
