Using a page-size graphic doesn't sound like a good idea to me! Perhaps you could take their cover page, then insert a section break and continue with your own styles and layout. Check that style-names you want to use aren't already defined in the cover page: if it's really a cover page, I wouldn't expect any overlap with your body text. You could also tell us a bit more about "doesn't give the right results".
