I still don't understand why Word inserts the \* MERGEFORMAT into most fields. I try to strip it out of every one I create. Of course, when you create the fields by typing them this isn't a problem. |

I've been wondering the same thing... For what it's worth, when you insert fields via the Field dialog box, the switch will be inserted if "Preserve formatting during updates" is selected (and it is selected by default for fields that support the switch).
