Have you checked whether the combined character is available via Insert|Symbol? If it's not available there as a combined character, the method varies according to the character & glyph. If you give us details, we may be able to help.
PS: If a combined character doesn't exist, check whether the diacritic is available from the Spacing Modifier sub-set.

Thank you much.
Yes, I spend the time looking thru the symbol table, and much of what I want is not there. But I have figured out much and can do glyphs. I also use font subscripts and superscripts, but they don't seem to work in the boxes supplied by Equation. What's wrong? How do I do it? It doesn't seem like it should be impossible. |

Since you don't tell us anything about what characters & glyphs you want help with, how can you expect an answer? Plus, you didn't even mention before anything about equations - so we would also need to know what equations you're working with. We are not mind readers.

Thank you for your impolite reply, but I realize that
the subtle intricities of Word 2010 are difficult. I think the equation question is good enough for someone familiar. But here is a more complete question: I inserted a sigma character from the Greek and Coptic, then I selected table's Combining Circumflex Accent and typed 0302,Alt+X but the Circumflex does not appear. How do I get a Circumflex on the sigma? It is very common in literature. |

I suggest you be careful about throwing brickbats around here. How do you suppose anyone is to know you're trying to work with equations unless you say so? It might surprise you to learn the there are many uses for combining diacritics that have nothing to do with the equation editor.
FWIW, I have no difficulty at all combining the sigma & circumflex characters in both lower-case and upper-case - whether or not I use the equation editor (the latter actually makes it easier). See attached.

You don't seem to realize that you have manufactured an
accusation of which I am not guilty, namely, that I was using equation without telling you. I was not using equation except when I indicated. But of course I am guilty of not telling you that I was not using equation. Was my last description about the circumflex good enough? After your last reply post, I tried the sigma circumflex again and it worked. I have another thing that doesn't work on my Windows7: pressing "new folder" does nothing. I have to use "md" on the command screen. And when I am on the internet with Firefox, I keep getting messages that my computer is slow and needs fixing and let us fix it for you. I tried one once but they wanted money. Maybe they cause the problem and then want money to fix it. Doesn't Microsoft have a similar way of fixing computers, like when they do upgrades, and maybe I can trust? |

I'll leave it to anyone else who cares to read this thread to make their own judgments.
As for messages relating to Firefox, that has nothing to do with Office. Firefox is a proprietary 3rd-party application, so one cannot reasonably expect Microsoft to take any responsibility for making it work with Windows or keeping it up-to-date. End of discussion. Thread closed.
