Have you checked whether the combined character is available via Insert|Symbol? If it's not available there as a combined character, the method varies according to the character & glyph. If you give us details, we may be able to help.

PS: If a combined character doesn't exist, check whether the diacritic is available from the Spacing Modifier sub-set.
