Default Formatting Cross-References in Word 2010

I am using Bookmarks and Cross References to update sections of a template I created. Everything is working fine except I want to remove line spaces in the Cross-Referenced field. I want the text to be identical but the spacing to be different. e.g.:

Bookmark 1 : Sentence
line space
Sentence,,, etc.

Cross-Ref (Bookmark1) : Sentence
Sentence

FYI. I tried the line spacing options set to 0 before and after and single spacing. I also played with the switch options \* charformat. Even when I manually delete line spaces they return whenever I Update Field.

Can anyone offer some other option or solution to this?

Thank you
