Missing some work from work really need help
Hi basically I am writing my dissertation for uni and I have lost a load of work. What happened was yesterday I did a load of work on my mac, then when I got home from library I loaded up the word document and what I had done was gone, so I quit out of word completely and loaded up the doc again and my work was back, so I emailed it to myself. then this morning I go to do some more and it is gone again and it is also missing from the emailed versions. How ever many times i quit and reload it it doesn't seem to be there. Is there anything I can do like a recovery or previous saves or anything Thanks |

Hi lukepierce222,
Were you saving to a system drive or to a USB drive? If the latter, did you make sure to eject it properly?

Hi lukepierce222,
If you tried to edit the document as an email attachment, Word can't update that attachment. The saved file may still be wherever the Mac OS stores its temporary internet files, or in an equivalent folder for email temporary files.

Never work within Word on documents on a USB drive (or any mobile media).
It is a prime way to corrupt (trash) your document. The document must be on your hard drive when open in Word (editing or printing). From outside Word (your operating system interface) copy back and forth to the mobile media. |

Corruption
Charles, I am interested in your comment. I have never noticed any problem in editing a Word doc on a flash drive. Can you explain what the problem would be? After all, virtually all files on portable USB drives require an application which is going to be on the computer's hard drive. And in such applications as video editing, one often has files on some external drive, although admittedly, these applications do not actually operate on the file but on file information.

I have found it now, the file had moved itself to a location which i can't even find, the only reason i can see it is because of the recently open bit on word it says it was stored in this rare file which i can't even find on macintosh hd... i had to search the name and eventually found it. really appreciate the help everyone thanks for replying
