Default Changing Opening Document

I am using Word2003. Every time I open the program, the document already has content (words) on the screen. I have tried to find the location of this opening template but have not been able to locate it. I can delete the words and begin but I would prefer to correct the probelm for good.

Can anyone tell me how to revise this opening document to remove these words?

Thanks,

Greg

Hi Greg,

Your description suggests someone's saved something in Word's Normal template. You can find that template's location via Tools|Options|File Locations>User Templates. Go to that folder, open the Normal template for editing, delete the unwanted content, save & close. From now on, any new documents should be empty.

I used the Tools>Options>File Location>User Templates but there were no templates listed. I cannot locate the normal template.

I cannot determine the name or location of the template that Word is opening by default. How can I figure this out?

When you navigated to the folder location indicated by Tools>Options>File Location>User Templates, did you tell Word to open the 'Document templates (*.dot)' file type?

Hi Greg,

Since Word 2003 always has a Normal.dot template, I can only conclude that you're either not navigating to the correct folder, or you're not telling Word to open templates for editing. For further info on this, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323117

I ran a search on normal.dot and no file was found. I may just have to remove and reinstall Word. I cannot figure this out.

Hi Greg,

As previously stated, the Normal.dot template will be stored in the folder indicated under Tools|Options|File Locations>User Templates. Since that folder is usually hidden, it's perhaps not surprising a search didn't find it.

Uninstalling & re-installing Word won't solve the problem. Word will leave the Normal.dot template behind and won't replace it when reinstalling.
