As previously stated, the Normal.dot template will be stored in the folder indicated under Tools|Options|File Locations>User Templates. Since that folder is usually hidden, it's perhaps not surprising a search didn't find it.

Uninstalling & re-installing Word won't solve the problem. Word will leave the Normal.dot template behind and won't replace it when reinstalling.
