If the check boxes are ActiveX controls rather than form fields or content controls, you may need the Fixit in KB3025036 to repair damage done by one of the December updates.
The issue is described in this blog entry (the issue is in all Office programs, not just Excel). This probably won't do anything about the pictures not showing. When they're blank, are all the pictures in the document blank, or just some of them?
