Resources, subcontractors not employees

As a general contractor building a schedule I has assigned different subcontractors to different tasks using the resources field. The problem becomes Project is treating those subcontractors as individual employees governed by the defined work day and is moving tasks around based on over allocation of resources. Is there a way to set Project up to allow it to not consider the workload assigned to these resources? Thanks…
