Default Can I link video to Powerpoint 2008 for Mac ?

Hi,

I have a small video clip (4Mo) I would like to link to my Powerpoint presentation in such a way that if I send the latter by email, the clip is an integral part of the Powerpoint file and will play automatically without mishap. If possible, I want to avoid having simply to 'insert video' because this simply 'links' the video and usually will not play on another computer (even if I send the video separately as an attachment at the same time as the Powerpoint file). It seems to be such a simple operation, but till now my reading on various forums leads me to conclude that it may not be possible. Why not ? Or am I mistaken ? What's the problem ? At present, I use the Mp4 format.

Is there anyone out there able to give me an answer ? I'm wondering whether it's perhaps impossible to make a video part of a Powerpoint 2008 presentation, but I'd like to have confirmation about this from someone 'in the know'. Is it only Powerpoint 2013 that will allow you to do this ?

I haven't got a mac but on a PC only 2010 onwards (equivalent to 2011 on) can EMBED video. In all earlier versions they can ONLY be linked. I would guess this is true for 2008

Many thanks for your reply. I must admit I thought one had to have Powerpoint 13 to be sure of having the video embedded ; but if you say 2010 will do it, I guess it would be worth my while making (or just saving ?) the presentation in Powerpoint 2010 and hoping my recipients will have at least the latter version in order to read it. Will Powerpoint 2010 read mp4 ? If not, which video formats will do ?

PowerPoint 2010 will play mp4 on a PC but only if:

EITHER It is on Windows 8
OR Quicktime is installed

My good friend Troy Chollar has published a compatability chart which you might find useful

Thanks, very useful. Searching further, it seems the .avi format can be read in both Mac and Windows formats. Can you recommend a good video conversion tool (if possible, free) ?
