Smart Art is not all that Smart!
What usually happens is resizing shapes is OK but if you MOVE shapes the connectors can rereoute behind the shape and appear to connect elsewhere. If you temporarily set the shape to have a transparent fill you will probably see it is still linked to the middle. Only solution I know is to move the shape or the shape above so the connector is visible.
